just the women atheletes? any reason why?

yup, the women ski jumpers even went to court here but they lost, so the ruling of the IOC was upheld...reason: not developed enough to have the same status as the other sports...but the more critical feminists would say, not economically-viable enough to sell tickets and fill up the stadiums...I agree with them partly, esp in women's hockey...it's just the north americans who dominate it but instead of all these threats, they shld launch initiatives to promote the sports and encourage people if not to play them then at least to watch...the alpine and the sledding sports are dominated by the europeans and how many people do them, anyways? yet, the north americans are not whining about them......let's see what they'd do if NHL finally decides not to participate in Sochi esp if for the IOC. the bottomline is merely- profit...

damn that dollar...
i never really "got" why womens sports weren't popular.
perhaps someone with a y chromosome could put in some input.
here the popular sports are... swimming (which coincidently) get's the most funding, followed by the footballs and the crickets (which i don't watch). the netballers (typically female) do not get as much funding for their sports, and so most hold down a full time job as well as take part in the matches. when it's on tv, the stadiums the matches are played in are almost empty. it's quite sad. yet, there is a higher chance of hair pulling then what you'd see in a men's basketball game. i don't understand people's priorities.

That's a good question V, but I'm not sure Y chromosomes alone are qualified to answer that. Why aren't women watching women's sports?
thyme
bec we should be doing something else more traditional......but have you seen a hockey game- luckily no hairpulling possible...
hey LaRa....howz it going? I probably do more than watch- am not much of a sports fan anyways except when it's the country's pride and honour at stake so I've to cheer for the home team....
Rosemary
The only "womens sports" that seem popular are figure skating and the gymnastics it seems (maybe horse riding and marathon), maybe these are old ideas about women not being serious in sports and therefore not worth investing in or watching...
And yet, these last olympics, the womens events were more exciting than the mens in many events
Sage
I agree and many look really good too- doesn't matter the sports ...how's your tennis btw, Lost-san....your backhand's already precise?
Oracle
Hopefully, it may change and be more of an even footing in the future.
My tennis- slowly improves, my serve is coming along and the backhand continues to improve... Wimbeldon is still a long way off though. I took an extra lesson last week and although they should be same level, they seemed so much better...
Delphi
hopefully, but as LaRa pointed out, it shld be the women who shld get interested first then perhaps the dinosaurs would change their minds......you know how the canadian women hockey team practice, eh? they play with guys and some of them also play in guys leagues- and its probably the same elsewhere...if given the opportunity and more support, the sports can improve...well, goodluck with your lessons and Wimbledon is a good goal
oops...time for the royal hibernation....nice hanging out with you ladies, V, LaRa...oyasuminasai, Lost-san..have a nice weekend...
Soothsayer
Have a nice weekend YRH- spring is coming!
