running for charity - cancer research (May/30/2009 )

Pages: 1 2 3 4 Next

hey guys!

i've been kinda away from the forum lately. what i want to say is that after being inspired by vetticus3 i've been doing some running too, and i've decided to run for cancer research uk, so if any of you feels like donating money for this charity you can sponsor me :) i'll be doing the great north run, which is a half marathon (i'm not ready to run a whole marathon as vetticus did  )
the webpage is http://www.runningsponsorme.org/rechegoyen in case any of you is interested, and thanks for your support. see you around!

Could you tell usw something of the charity? What % of proceeds actually goes to research? What is the track record of that money bringing significant discovery or advancement in treatments?

hi GeorgeWolff,
I would not be able to tell you the exact % that goes to research, but you could take a look at this webpage which has the progress for the last couple of decades:

I understand your concern, and the best thing I can do is to hope that the charity makes the best out of the money they get. I know that at least one lab in my university (the lab in the floor above mine) has got some cancer research uk funding.

Thanks and I appreciate your commitment. I wasn't so informed after reviewing the website.

Most of the people that run for charities is because they have received help from them and you can read their stories on the respective sponsoring websites. Fortunately I haven't been in a situation where a relative of mine or someone close to me needs their help, but personally I find it more rewarding to run with a purpose than just running for the sake of it.
Casandrita, of course you can donate if you feel like it :( and I'll try not to break a leg, I think I've had enough with a broken elbow :o
Best wishes.

I would never ever think that you're running for any other reason than raising money for cancer research but while you're there, you can also start some social networking :( plus when you visit home, you'd be running faster than the dogs so you'd not get bitten anymore...so how fast can you run the 10 k? you're doing only 10 k everyday, right? an hour? or 2?

-casandra-

you know casey, i enjoy when people running in the opposite direction to mine always give me a smile or a "morning!", not precisely networking, but sort of... and it is definitively good training to run away from the dogs, that gives good sprints :o currently i'm doing 10k in 50 min approximately, hope to get better by september!
see you later!

OMG, just was looking through my favourites folder... HI GUYS.
good for you TJ. I did a 5k run the other week (raised money for blood diseases)... working up towards a 1/2 marathon (again) which is raising money for autism. currently wearing my running top which says: running is a mental sport, and we are all INSANE!

anything to get out of finalising the end of the PhD. gee, i love procrastination.
