Apoptosis - which category in life science? (Nov/25/2007 )
thank you for all contributions and suggestions;
I also think that most will categorize "apoptosis" as a cell biological topic; as apoptosis is a physiological reaction, it should be possible to subsume it as molecular cell physiology;
when regarding cell biology I think in terms of subcellular compartments such as membranes, organelles, filaments, vesicles, large molecular complexes such as focal adhesion sites, etc and their molecular functions; so first you have a subcellular structure which is then to characterize down to the molecular structure and function;
apoptosis is not dedicated to a distinct subcellular structure but involves the whole cell with a dramatically modified and defined physiological activity
I agree with rhombus that the quality of work and not its label gives the success but I have enough examples where faculties, research groups, study groups etc try to unify their appearance by forcing their members to work in similar directions which means all should have the same label
