antibodies life - 4oC, -20oC or -80oC (Jun/06/2007 )
Does anybody know how long an antibody last at -80??
Many years. It is better to have it above 50ug/ml.
the salient point is the correct freeze protocol (freeze buffer, shock freezing), and that the Ab is suitable for freezing; if all this is done, freezing preserves Ab binding actvity for years
Not sure whether I need to put up a new topic..
I store my western antibodies at 4oC, as suggested by the manufacturer. Then may I know what is the 'shelf-life' for these? I've seen many antibodies left in the fridge by seniors. Wondering whether these antibodies are still working.. Thanks

What is the composition of buffer your antibodies supply? I think it will be better to make aliqiotes and freeze at -20C
In PBS with <0.1% sodium azide.. now I notice in the data sheet that the antibodies are stable for one year, some only mention 'up to 6 months'..
I always think that I can store antibodies for a long period...

Hi money!
In noticed buffer formulation and also storage conditions at 4C, I think it is maximum storage time for your Ab if not lower. And no doubts that activity of Abs will decrease during this storage. I think NaN3 will also degrade for a time and protection disappeared. It will be better to aliquote and freeze your Ab to save near the same activity.
Hi all,
Thanks for your answers. I always thought like money says, but I've noticed a loss of activity in the antibodies I use for WB after 6 or 8 months, even tough i keep them at -20 or -80 in PBS/azide.
Thank you

Ab´s supplied as sterile solutions; if taking aliquots, do it under sterile conditions; companies say at 4°C Ab is stable for months (but it has to be still sterile);
if you think it is no more stable or it was handled under unsterile conditions, add 0.005 % NaN3
Thanks for all the replies.
If it is better to freeze Ab in aliquots, I wonder why they put the "DO NOT FREEZE" notice in the data sheet.
Since time and experience have proven that Ab is better to be kept frozen, then perhaps I shall do that too..
