List five methods of sterilization - (Oct/17/2006 )

Pages: 1 2 3 Next

My friend had this question on an exam for a job and both of us could only come up with three methods - autoclaving, filter sterilizing, and UV irradiation. What other methods are there? This is driving me up the wall!

Another one could be the oven sterilization (I'm not sure how to translate it in English) but I mean when yo put the glassware into an oven. That's not autoclaving because there's no water inside

I think the last one is "gaz sterilization".

The main application is sterilization of solid devices which don't support heat.

isn't it gamma irradiation?

Right, in France it's Pasteur oven or Poupinel oven. It's 180°C for 90 minutes.
It's dried air

What about Formaldehyde Fumigation ?

For tissue culture the bottles and tubes etc. are sterilized by spraying with 70% ethanol before being placed into the sterile tissue culture hood....

I would guess ethanol/bleach and then chlorine gas sterilization (at least they work on seeds, dont see why they wouldn't in other applications)

In summary, that's what they say in my galenic syllabus:

1) Heat (Oven or autoclave)

2) Irradiation (UV or Gamma-ray)

3) Filtration

4) Gas sterilization (often ethylen oxide or formaldehyde)

So, all our answers are right cool.gif
