Bacteria Science Fair Questions - A few basic and complex questions about bacteria (Nov/04/2005 )
The bacteria types are Bacillus cereus, Penicillium chrysogenum, Pseudomonas fluorescens, Saccharomyces cerevisiae, and Serratia marcescens. And also, i've heard different pronunciations for 'agar', whats the correct pronunciation? Thanks!
BUH-sillis SEE-ree-us (cereus is like 'serious')
PEN-i-sill-ee-um (not sure about the species pronunciation; I could only guess, but the first is much like penicillin)
sudo-MOAN-as (like 'pseudo'nym; monas is like 'bonus') air-OOH-genosa ( 'aeru' like saying 'ay roux' if you cook; genosa like testarossa
SACK-a-RO-my-seas SARA-vice-ee-ay (and we like this one; you use it to make beer)
sir-RAY-shuh MAR-sess-uhns (for the 'ratia' part, think 'ratio' to get the first part; marcesans has tempo similar to saying fluoresence)
there is some variation, but this is how I was taught
OH, and there are many opinions on agar, but most of what I have heard is typically the same way you pronounce auger (as in ice auger for ice-fishing, or augers in Harry Potter)
