two different papers, two different people, same year - problem with citation (Apr/03/2009 )

Hi all
in the reference of my manuscript I have two different citations that both start with Wang and both are published in the year 2001. I don't know how to refer to these two in the main body of the manuscript.

Wang NS, Unkila MT, Reineks EZ, Distelhorst CW (2001) Transient expression of wild-type or mitochondrially targeted Bcl-2 induces apoptosis, whereas transient expression of endoplasmic reticulum-targeted Bcl-2 is protective against Bax-induced cell death. J. Biol. Chem. 276: 44117–44128.

Wang X (2001) The expanding role of mitochondria in apoptosis. Genes Dev. 15: 2922–2933.

any ideas? I am citing them as Wang et al., 2001 in the manuscript. that is what I'm supposed to do according to the journal guidelines.

You could simply put Wang et al... 2001 and the other one as Wang (2001) the difference is the et al. (in your text) + in your literature list: the First letter of the surname is different too: NS for 1 wang and X for the other wang... (you have multiple authors for the first and only 1 , wich is Wang, for the second What TC stated is not correct because the second publication has only wang as author, not wang et al...

Different journal have different style.
At least in our field, I will list them as Wang et al., 2001 and Wang, 2001.

Here are some links with basic rules.
However when facing problems like Curtis its not always clear how to do so.

link1
link2
link3
link4

And the following link is a website that makes the citations for you: you need to enter the data and the website generates the citation:

citation machine
(pick your style at the left corner of the website)

Do not forget it all depends on what style you use, not all the journals or schools have the same rules.
Like wuxx0153 allready said.
