Conference attendance with poster - (Dec/22/2014 )
I recently had a poster accepted for an international conference. The conference is a major one in its field and only held every 4 years. As I recently changed jobs and no longer work directly in the field I will have to self-fund to attend.
What are people's opinions on the value of attending conferences when you are only presenting a poster?
Cheers

You're on the right track - the objective is not to present the poster per se but to further your career. Considering your career aspirations, who will be in audience/present at meeting for your to contact who can further your career. Also investigate potential to wrtie off the travel and meeting expenses.
I agree, plus if it is a major conference and rarely held then presenting a poster will look good on your academic CV too.
A lot also depends on where you are now and what your goals are.
Meeting people and making connections can be usefull but only if it is needed and this depends on your goals.
