Inkscape is totally free and a really really good alternative to Illustrator,very easy to use too.

 

Anyway - to add to the list of image editors - ImageJ.

Exactly, Inkscape is a great alternative. I understand people tend to use PowerPoint for posters, because it is the only program they ever used to make a coloured oval, but there are so many problems with that.

(and actually.. MS Office costs money too ;) )
