So I'm a graduate student who has been kicked out of my lab that I was in. My advisor blindsided me pretty much. I am unsure of what to do know. I've been in my area of research for so long that I've actually lost interest in other parts of science. I don't want to leave the area that I live, but that seems like the only option. Anyone out there have any advice?

That's rough. You're not alone in that experience. Getting kicked out before the end of the semester might be against the rules of your graduate school, depending on the circumstances. Ask them to see what happens with your stipend and status.

If you are being sacked for unfair reasons and have documentation, now is the time to prepare it. This includes your lab book and any emails for your advisor. Make copies for the grad school and HR department. Clear your name, or at least write a rebuttal. One professor I know went to the uni HR department (not the grad school) and filed paperwork there. That pretty much screwed the student over for good, as the student couldn't even apply for a job at that uni to support themself and reference checks would have revealed that situation to a new employer.

Pull together your references; if you're short, work somewhere else for a while and build up new ones. You might end up leaving your field of interest or moving to a new institution (which would probably be easier after all is said and done).
