post doc (PhD) positions - how hard to find without OWN grant money?? (Sep/09/2009 )

I am currnently writing my PhD thesis, because my grant money will expire in feb. 2010!

this is not enough time (approx. 6 months) to aquire my own grant money, to work as a post doc. i want to go from the lab, i´m currently working, as fast as possible!

how hard is it to get a post-doc position, without own money? i think i have pretty good references and also a small publication list which is worth looking at!!

thanks for suggestions

It was my understanding that for a post-doc position, you wouldn't need to bring your own funding with you. None of the post-docs that have started this year or so in my department brought funding with them.......

Does this depend on country/uni/department/lab??

thanks for reply leelee!
i was a little in panic, because a few of my colleagues got some grant money.
but in their case, they were in laboratories where they got a lot of support by their supervisors -> acquiring the money for them. from my point of view, many of them did not get their OWN money, rather their bosses got it for them...

but my boss, i think, is not interested to support me further!

In the UK the PI applies for grant funding which covers the wage of a post-doc and then advertises a position. The usual route to independence here is to do 2 or 3 post-doc positions and then apply for your own funding via fellowship schemes (although there are some early career fellowships that you can apply for fresh out of grad school but these are highly competitive!!)
