Centrifuge Radius for rpm-->g - what radius to measure ? (Sep/27/2005 )
Hi,
I found the formula I needed to convert from rpm to g, but I was wondering exactly what radius to measure. Because the tubes are not in a vertical position (but horizontal) I don't know if the radius is measured from the top of the tub, the middle or the bottom...
Thanks ;-)

radius is measured from the middle
you can only calculate an average g force to be the most accurate. Radius is calculated til the middle of the liquid.
Hi -- I usually just use the data the manufacturer's have for calculating such things.
Beckman has an online calculator for their rotors here.
Sorvall has a downloadable stand-alone program for their rotors, and RFC charts as well. You can get both from their website, in the Service & Support section.
An additional stand-alone program that has a good mix of over 130 common Beckman and Kendro (formally Sorvall) rotors is available here.
Hope this helps!
Ok thank you all ;-)

Eppendorf has the same thing for their centrifuges at http://www.eppendorfna.com/support/online-calculator.asp
