Basic question:
When reading papers I often come across the phrase," This gene has not been cloned." What does this mean exactly?

cloning usually means that the RNA has been reverse transcribed and the cDNA sequence of the gene in question has been integrated into a plasmid -- this allows investigators to sequence the gene, determine intron/exon structure, make probes etc....
