CpG methylation - Methylation on GpC also possible? (Sep/07/2005 )
I know that cytosines in the DNA can be methylated when they are followed by Guanines. But is the otherway around also true? So can cytosines in a GpC format also be methylated?
This information is very important for me since I want to design primers for methylation-specific PCR

depends what organism you are looking at,
in plants there is non-CpG methylation although it can not be said for mammals, i think the jury is still out on that one.
as for GpC specifically, I haven't seen anything in the literature, what is after the C sequence???
CpNpG is a common motif that is methylated in plants.
