Begin with what? - SHould I begin with perl? Java? or Python? (Aug/31/2005 )
Hi everybody:
For bioinformatics which one is the begining of the road?
Which one is the one that I should learn first? Perl? Java? or Python?
I got that all have their own advantages and disadvantages but I want to know which one is most fundamental bioinformatics language?
Thanks
Benign
Start with Perl.
Java is slow and not supported by default for some browsers (also, downloading and using the runtime environment is a pain for a standalone program).
I'm not sure about Python.
Considering the fact that there are entire communities dedicated to creating bioinformatics software with Perl should be enough to persuade you of it's effectiveness in this area. Perl is really really neat and can integrate nicely into a web application via CGI.
Hope that helps,
Hank

i agree too
perl is more biocompatible ( i have heard )and easier to learn
plus its more widly used in bioinformatics
Start with perl is the more complete... and als the documentation are good enough to learn.

A friend of mine is a Software Engineer, what he should try first when he jumps into the BIOinformatics?
Do a project with a real world biology problem, better be a small software. but will be able to allow him learn a bit of biology.
