How to measure neuronal cell differentiation? - (Aug/10/2005 )
use microscope to capture and measure neurite outgrowth
OR
measure protein level of some neuronal expression marker such as GAP-43 by westernblot
are these two methods both effective to measure neuronal cell differentiation? and which one is better? or does anybody know other approaches for that? thanks a lot.

Its a tough question to answer, and I've thought abaout it in the past quite a bit. A combination of both will probably be more convincing. I've also seen class III beta-tubulin used as a marker for neuronal differentiation, either by western or immunostaining.
