Cell attachment - cells and jam (Jul/07/2005 )
So how do cells physically attach???
I know of course ligands promote connections with the extracellular matrix and that is all fine and well. However, like my confusion of why jam sticks to the ceiling (please enlighten me also!) i know it happens but why?
What forces/bonds are in play to keep the ligands connected within the menbrane of the ECM, and what causes the ECM to stick to a substrate in the first place.
And how does that fe**in jam stay partly on the ceiling!
Bonds? Forces? Eek!
please help a confused PhD wreck of a man

Integrins bind the cell membrane to the ECM. These integrins are kept within the cell membrane through hydrophilic, hydrophobic, and van der wall forces. They are also indirectly linked to the ECM and microfilaments via scaffolding proteins like talin, paxillin and alpha-actinin. Interestingly, cells die off if they aren't anchored to an ECM (except for cancerous cells like HeLa).
