Asking:the standard of a "new" gene - the standard of a "new" gene (Jan/11/2005 )

biggrin.gif Hi ,everyone :
With the completion of human genome project, is there still any chance of discovering new genes (through bench clonning) which will have no identical sequences in human genome database? Would you tell me what is the standard of a "new " gene ?
Thank you very much!!!

What is the definition of a gene? - a expressed seqeunce, right? Although human genome sequencing is completed, do we know all expressed sequences? no. There are efforts such as the EST project to identify expressed genes, there are still chances that you can find some novel expressed genes and identify function for known expressed genes. So the genome has tons of gold to mine, new genes, new functions, but maybe not new sequences .
