speckly DNA - why is my dna speckly?????????? (Nov/25/2004 )

Help!! I have had some problems with cloning a mutant i generated by PCR, after having to resort to blunt end ligation, my insert went in in the wrong orientation. so i am now trying to cut out the section that has the mutation in it and put it into a construct that contains the rest of the gene in the correct orientation. However the maxi prep i am trying to use to put it into appears to run as a smear with lots of speckles of bright stuff (when examined by uv) is this because the DNA is sedimenting out of solution or could it be contamination, and in either case what can i do about it?????????
