Is bio for me? - (Nov/14/2008 )
I agree with everything said before. Grades alone don't make a good PhD student. It's about looking for your own answers, and that's a different story from memorizing answers.
If I can do it with my poor focus, anyone can.
If you are motivated enough and don't meet requirements, retake an exam or two. I did it, it worked.
Hi! I totally agree with what everybody said, and you do sound like you really like biology! I don't know what is your situation (I mean, rent, food, those tiny little details, hehe), but if you have the chance, I would definetely suggest some voluntary work in a lab! Also, try to find a lab with a nice environment!
It could be something short-term, even a month or two, sometimes they have a short project to be done and would be really convenient for them to have u around! (who doesnt like free work? )
But another good thing about it is that, at least from my experience, ppl who work in a lab are usually very nicely surprised to see someone young and eager to learn (who cares about grades!), and will definetely try to teach you a lot, if they are nice!
Another advantage is that you can try a couple of different fields/environments before committing yourself to a MSc or Phd. And I guess if you have some lab experience, that would be a great advantage, even if your grades are not the best ever.
Good luck, and go for what you love!
