Citation in a protocol? - (Nov/12/2008 )
I'm taking a portion of a protocol from an unpublished draft of a paper from a collaborator, and adding on several parts afterwards. How do I cite it? Should I put "author and others, year, unpublished" at the beginning and end of the portions I took>

Being that it's unpublished and that its only a protocol (not data), I probably wouldn't bother to cite the paper. I would write out the entire protocol and leave it at that. The exception to this might be if its a very new technique that your collaborator would want credit for. You might want to ask them first.

but if it is a collaborator then make them an author and the protocol will then be published (with their name).
or
you can acknowledge them for the protocol.

Or, you can cite that portion of the protocol as a personal communication from the person who provided you with it.
