when can I start perform experiments on cells? - (Oct/19/2008 )
Could anybody help me???? I would like to know if there exists any informations when should be performed experiments on cells especiall epithelial one? I mean after which passage or time after thawing a cell culture? Any literature links would be very helpful
Thanks for any reply

it depends on your cell line; ATCC offers details how to handle each cell line which they provide; are you interested in epithelial barrier experiments?

Unfortunately I don't have this cell line from ATCC. To my knowledge, somebody gave us it so the source is unknown. To be more precise I'm interested in DU145 (prostate cancer) and MDA-MB-231 (breast cancer) and any infomations are vital to me.

I'm not an expert but as i know there's no literature about cells line (only ATCC, but you said it won't work for you). this way you should look for pappers reviews and personal experience from other users.
As i know neoplasic cells have ongoing passages and generally they are good to work after thrid passage.
i'll try to gather informations around these cells line, and post here.

I'm pretty sure MDA-MB-231 is available from ATCC, so the info should be there! However, I am having problems connecting to the ATCC at the moment, so I can't check.
Besides, the answer for immortal cell lines like the ones mentioned, is usually, "as soon as you have enough cells for your experiment". Ideally, you will want to keep your cells up for as short a time as possible before starting your experiment, so as to limit the possibilities for over-growth and/or contamination. I would probably only use cells that have been up for 48 hours or more so as to allow them to recover their normal cell function after thawing.
Thanks for posting info. There are a helpful
