Scutigera - (Sep/03/2008 )

Pages: 1 2 3 4 Next

Hi guys!
I live in a quite old house sorrounded by fields and trees. In the last days I found some Scutigera (House centipede) hanging around the house, in the kitchen and in my bedroom. I was not worried, because I know that they are common in the houses, like many insects.

I must confess I'm quite disgusted by insects, but not phobic, so I decided to ingnore them. I know in fact that they are predators of annoying insects, then useful critters from my point of view. happy.gif
The matter is that today, I found a very big one into the mug I left next to my bed yesterday night. Probabily it was attracted by the tea flavour. Anyway: bleah+shivers... ninja.gif
This made me wonder: is it really safe to leave the Scutigera free to move around where there is food and personal things? are they "clean"? am I risking to have a Scutigera population burst if I leave them indisturbed?

Would like to have some here rolleyes.gif , but it's too cold. But they are useful, catch flies and other annoying insects. They are poisonous, but not dangerous for humans (more like a wasp or bee sting). But as they need prey, are night-active and live more or less hidden I guess the encounters will be more by chance and the population only burst if you have an enormous pest population, too.
Have a look in good old wikipedia

I can send you a nice sample wink.gif

The story goes on:
yesterday night I was sitting on my bed with my back leaning on the wall. Suddenly I turned my head and I could see a Scutigera on the wall pointing at me, just 5-10 cm from my head. I was more or less shocked, because I was convinced that they were quite shy and I didn't imagine that it would have approched that much!!!
I jumped up and it tried to rush behind the pillows, so I took them away and moved the bed from the wall...
I couldn't trap it, because it runned too high on the wall and it was still there when I fell asleep. Today morning it was still on the wall but I didn't feel like I was going to hunt it dry.gif ...
I don't know, but I hope it was just some smell or something that attracted it by chance (my tea again?). Anyway I'm beginning to feel a bit nervous: wasn't it supposed to stay away from me???
I mean: it's beginning to behave as it was in ITS fun-park and not in MY bedroom. It doesn't seem to be frightened by my presence anymore...and it doesn't pay any rent to me to stay in my room laugh.gif

Probabily the Scutigera is mad at me because yesterday morning I have chased away its fellow (?)... tongue.gif

But the pay, they erase the annoying flies, cockroaches, beetles, silverfish etc (and who was first living there? laugh.gif ). Perhaps you should find an dark aside place where you aren't regularly and provide there some concealment and some wet cloth. They like wet, warm concealed places. If its a lockable box you can from time to time get rid of some as you catch them inside and transfer them to another place far enough away.
If this one still approaches, then it likes you perhaps wink.gif . And they are much likeable than every cockroach, termite or fly imo...

Thanks Hob.
Well, I have read that they gain a couple of legs (are they called legs for insects/arthropoda too?) at every moult, so I can dare to guess that my room-mate is old. It should be a respected member of the Scutigera society.....

To be honest, I hope I won't see it again tonight, but I'm afraid it's improbable. Otherwise, I'll have to get rid of it somehow, as it's becoming too daredevil. unsure.gif
I'll let you know...

Yesterday night I found only one Scultigera, but it was not the same individual of the night before, since it was a lot smaller. This one was shy and quicker than the other one: it ran away to hide when I turn on the lights.
Then, I didn't see any other around for the whole night... happy.gif
If things go on this way, we are going to live happily ever after...

now you have got an scutigera family living with you! biggrin.gif
i have found 3 scorpions in my house lately, not the big black ones, but the small yellowish ones, i dont like scorpions! mad.gif and the wors part, if i lived in a place with trees and nature all around me as you do ila it would be alright, but i live near downtown!

Cockroaches are the only creatures on this planet that scare the crap out of me. I don't scare of any other bugs,..... well because I am a man,....I can get lizards with my hands, I can catch grasshoppers..........I'm really a new Steve Irvin......but there is something with cockroaches that I really don't understand. I've been like this since my childhood....if I see a cockroach from 10 miles away I'll change my direction.
