Storing DMSO - (Aug/15/2008 )
Hi
I heard something in lab today and wanted to know if others have the same experience. When we dissolve compounds for treating cell culture we use "cell culture" grade DMSO that comes in an ampule. Some people aliquot that DMSO into sterile eppindorf tubes to use over a period of time (stored in the dark). I was recently told that DMSO "dissolves the plastic" of the eppindorf tube causing the DMSO to become "more toxic". Is this true?
Do people generally store all DMSO in glass vials? What is the highest concentration that can be stored in plastic? Thanks for your help, Cindy

In our lab we don't do any aliquot just store it in the original ampule at RT. not sure about plastic tube but we keep the cell with DMSO in the plastic vails, don't we? so may be it's not ture~

I store tissue culture grade DMSO at Room Temperature in it's original GLASS BOTTLE. All the DMSO I have ever bought has been supplied in glass.....this must be for a reason. The manufacturers of the DMSO would have used plastic IF it was suitable. We no longer have glass tissue culture media bottles do we. Cryogenic storage vials are of course plastic.....but remember that the DMSO is frozen AND AT ONLY 10%

Hi
Thank you both for your input--- one thing though I did just think of as well- When we buy chemical libraries they are dissolved in DMSO and stored in plastic plates?
