This seems like a common occurrence in most labs and there really isn't much you can do about it. I am consistently the first one in the lab in the morning and am the last one out in the evening and yet my boss says I don't work enough. Meanwhile others come in around 10 or even 11 and are gone by 4 or 5 every single day and he doesn't say a word to them. I also work on the weekends and I'm always the only one there. It doesn't even seem to matter if I'm producing good data or if they aren't. You have to keep in mind that you are there for your own future and interests. I assure you that if you continue to work hard, it will pay off. It took over two years but now my project has taken off while the others plug along with hardly any progress. On top of everything, if your boss is anything like mine, talking to him or her will only make matters worse. This isn't a competition and just keep reminding yourself that you work so hard for your own future and career, not necessarily praise from the boss. I know a bit of encouragement is helpful but if you can't get it from your boss, make sure you are giving it to yourself. You know you are working hard and doing what it takes. I only recommend leaving a lab if things are absolutely intolerable. This situation is annoying and frustrating but not what I would consider large enough to give up all your work to date!

And why supervisors do that?

May be some misunderstanding or mismatch in stars/horoscope. They are not villains they show in movies. tongue.gif

rkay is right. You are there for you. You and your goals are your motivation. Everything else means nothing. Good luck.

Do you usually work harder than you have been recently? I get the impression from my PI that even if you work harder than others, if you're not working as hard as usual he'll "prompt" you to work harder. Or it could just be his form of motivating you?

i'd just like to add something. being in a lab 14 hours a day or more doesn't imply your work will be more efficient. there's something called time planning and if you get well organized you don't need to be there during the weekends or during late night hours (weekends are made to rest!!). so, relax, concentrate on what you're doing. try not to be on the messenger or checking your email while you're supposed to be working. do well whatever you're doing in the moment you're doing it, whether it is working or having fun. it's not good to be on vacations when you have stuff pending in the lab, you don't even enjoy your vacations because you're thinking about the job you haven't done and how bad it will be when you come back. anyway, good luck. i hope you don't have to go to another lab.

how true how true!!!

And for lolita: I know its hard to see lazy people beeing looked after all the time, BUT maybe your boss knows that you can look after yourself alone and do not need his help that much as the lazy people do? Maybe he knows that your work is good and/or you work hard even without him looking for you all the time (what is not the case for the lazy people)?
