to read an article or scientific paper?

it depends on your intention: is it part of screening to get an overview f.i. what has been done so far; so, a crosswisely reading will do

or to understand a topic in detail, you may have to read also some of its references;

if you familiar with a topic, you start with headline and abstract, go to images, figures and legends, and finish with (parts of) discussion
