Lab Meeting Presentation - General tips anyone? (Jul/02/2008 )

I am an undergraduate working as an intern at a lab at a very prestigious research hospital, and I am set to give my first presentation at our weekly lab meeting this week. This is my first time to ever do any kind of presentation in front of anyone besides peers and professors, and the thought of presenting to this tough crowd of researchers and post-docs terrifies me!!

It's very casual, but I am wondering what exactly I should present. I have no real results-- up until now I have just been working on infecting tumor cells which I will hopefully soon be able to actually experiment with. My problem is, without any real data, what should I present to avoid boring my audience?

Also, probably more importantly, are there any general tips anyone has to offer regarding small presentations such as this?

Much appreciated,

Nervous student

When just starting a project, and having no real results, the idea is to let everyone know that you understand WHY you are doing what you are doing. So just make sure that your project outline is clear in your mind and that you understand the concepts behind the project. Make everything as simple as possible in your diagrams so that you don't get yourself confused, speak clearly, and be ready to answer simple questions. Don't stress over it though, think of it as just practice to get yourself used to speaking in front of a group. You needn't impress anyone or worry about boring them. Good luck!
