sperm number-confuseeeeed! - (Jun/08/2008 )
Hi there,
So just reading about sperm and how its made etc..and it says that 120million sperm are produced each day and that in a human ejaculate contains about 200,000,000 sperm..so does that mean that the 200,000,000 sperm comes from the total amount that is stored in the vas deferens?...so is it eva possible for an ejaculate to contain no sperm?? (if say sum1 ejaculated everyday??) if everyday 120million is being made sure it takes time to ultimately end up with 200million and then start the process all ova again or have i completely misunderstood the concept?
also..the stem cells A1 from which spermatids ultimately arise, it says in my book that in a rat a new cycle starts every 12 days...so in each tuble how many stem cells are dividing?...as one A1 cell will only produce 256 spermatids at the end of the cycle--so is it only ONE stem cell per tubule that starts dividing then 12 days later another stem cell in each tubule start dividing.
then in that case how come soo many sperm are produced in humans..it says in my book that it takes 64days in man to complete spermatogenesis...then how can 120000000 million sperm be made each day!! is there like thouuuuusands of A1 cells dividing at a time in the tubules? arrg...then how can we say (like in the rat) a certain number of days pass b4 a new cycle starts...man i hope im making sense..i just dnt get this!!!
Help me pleease
Thanksss

I think you are unnecessarily torturing yourself. There are things that are staggering in number, but so do we have a staggeringly amazing physiology. For further reading: http://search.vadlo.com/b/q?sn=158621799&a...sperm&rel=2
