Starting a PHD when you know the PI's contract runs out? - (Jun/04/2008 )

I'm going to do my diploma at a group and I really like the topic they are working on. Probably the boss will ask me if I wanna stay for a phd but I know that his contract with the institute ends one year after I would start my Phd work there. I just wanted to ask if anybody knows how things are for phd students in such cases. The institute is pretty good but the boss's publication output was not too big(but also not too bad) in the last years so I'm not sure he will move to an equivalent institute.

In general i would like to know (besides from the fact that you eventually have to move) how bad this really can end for a phd student?? Any experiences??

And if I don't go there would it be ok to ask some pi during application interviews and stuff how long his/her contracts are going?? or does it make a bad impression?

thanks for your advice

Finish your diploma (how long do you have to go?) and then start thinking about a PhD!
Around here your PhD usually is embedded in some kind of project that is done (and finished) at one institution and I don't know if your PI can take the project to his next job (or is there a possibility that he gets another conract at your university???)!
So don't stress yourself out....finish your diploma and let things come! And if your PI really asks you to do a PhD you can ask him this question directly!
