identify cell lines - (Apr/30/2008 )

Good night! I,m a spanish girl. My name is Amanda and I`m student of biology. I have to do a project in the faculty, and I need information to do it. This is my project:

Identification of cell lines of various origins

A fellow of a research center at the University of Cordoba make a mistake to identify and classify a number of cell lines of different origin including:
1) hypothalamic cell line producing somatostatin
2) pancreatic cell line producing insulin.
3) pituitary cell line producing growth hormone
4) tat cell line producing leptin
The head of the section asks the fellow to resolve the problem immediately.

That experiments and that kind of conduct should consider the fellow to be sure to accurately identify each of these cell lines.

Well, this is my project. I would be glad if you could provided me information.

Hmmm.. Sorry if I'm wrong, but this sounds suspiciously like a homework question. ("The head of the section asks the fellow to resolve the problem immediately.")

Isn't there something about all these cell lines that obviously makes them different from one another? What could you look for in order to determine which line is which? You need something that one line has or does that the others do not. Perhaps something they produce? Now what assays could you do to determine specifically which protein the cell lines are producing? What assays are used for examining proteins? This you should know or can find out with a small amount of research.

it´s homework level isn´t it? so, bioforum users have to give hints that you can solve it for yourself.

What do think: why the physiological tasks of each cell line are explicitly mentioned?

I think I have to build on techniques immunocytochemistry but the teacher told me that was somewhat easier.

I think your teacher is right; no other idea?
