How do I evaporate DMSO from a drug? - (Mar/12/2008 )

I have a couple of drugs that are in DMSO ~20% solution, and I need to evaporate the DMSO to recover the drug. Any ideas on how to do that?

Also, where can I get info on PBS and DMSO as far as lab applications go?

Why do you need to recover the drug? Most drugs can be used to treat things while in DMSO, and if they are already dissolved in DMSO then it is likely that this is the carrier they need (i.e. they won't dissolve in water/PBS)

PBS and DMSO - try the protocols pages on this site. Merck index is good for DMSO or search for the MSDS.

Sigma has good information on chemicals - see the Technical sheets (pdf) on the chemical's page.

I need to evaporate the DMSO because it wasn't supposed to be in the drug to begin with.

I misinterpreted my boss's instructions (or he misspoke) about recovering whatever drug was left which was originally dissolved in isoproplyl/water. I had evaporated the isopropyl/water and recovered some powder, but then I was told (at least as far as I interpreted his instructions) that we needed to wash the other vials with 20% DMSO to gather up whatever powder was there and collect it all into one vial. Which I did, but I found that DMSO isn't evaporating when I pass air into the solution.

Any ideas on how to remove the DMSO? Can it be removed? I need to dissolve the drug later in different solvents that are NOT DMSO, for instance, ethanol and human albumin, but I need to get rid of the DMSO first.

Try lyopholizing it. You need to use a system with a good vacuum pump and a good cooling trap.

What about a rotary evaporator?

The lyophilizer in my lab doesn't seem to work for some reason.

Any other suggestions?

If your compounds are stable against high temp, sure.

you could use a rotary evaporator. if the compound is heat labile then you can reduce the temperature of the bath.

how about a "speed-vac" (or equivalent).

DMSO is hard to get rid of >_< i recommend the vacuum manifold with an oil pump (trapping with dry ice + acetone). you can find this instrument generally in organic synthesis lab. hmm..you can ask them for using it i think =D i used to vacuum dmso using this way but there's a tip. you hv to use hair-dryer blowing around the bottom flask so it takes like few hours instead of days >_> good luck~!

tedious work; alternative to previous suggestions, try to blow with argon or N2 gas
