Good bosses, bad bosses - (Feb/12/2008 )
Do you think it is important to have a boss that is interested in your research? I know that it is kind of obvious answer....
I had both. I was with a PI that didn't care at all about what I was doing... we almost didn't talk about my progress, not because I did not wanted but because he didn't have time...during years. Instead I discuss a lot with other members of the lab. But anyway it was frustrating. By the time I was finishing mny degree there I had lost almost all my motivation...I even started to think that I hated science. But I think I did a nice work and I am happy to had last to the end of it.
I decided not to give up science yet so I found a new lab. I am happy now, my bosses like to discuss about my projects and share ideas. I enjoy talking with them....(is it normal?). Anyway, I feel I like my work again, the project and that I really want to have nice experiments and results....
I think I just wanted to share my experience.
did you have a boss like my first one? what did you do?
well. for me i prefer my boss to be aquanted with what i am doing and discuss it with me even once every 2 weeks or so and yes my boss is like that.
. . . I feel I like my work again, the project and that I really want to have nice experiments and results....
How the boss is does make a lot of difference. After all, boss is boss. U like him or U don't like him - he is your boss unless U one has guts to quit saying one is better than the boss. I like my boss - what he is not what he does to me. He has done a lot of favors to me but even if he had not, I think I still would like my boss. But, that is pure theoretical and would need a blinded study to confirm.
Solmaniar, isn't it better to be dedicated to one's one passion than be influenced by how others treat U? Just because someone is not nice should not make U hate science or love it. Good Luck. We all are sure that some day U will be a 'good boss'. When U become, hire me
