Fluorescence vs. Absorbance filters - (Feb/11/2008 )
Hi everybody:
Can I use fluorescence filters to make absorbance measurements?
Are those quite different?
Thanks in advance.

It depends on the filters, many fluorescence filters are uni-directional, so you have to make sure that the light is traveling in the right direction (look for an arrow on the filter, it should point in the direction of the light path) and that the filter doesn't have a mirrored side, which will reflect the light if you are trying to use if for absorbance.

Thank you, Bob1. I really appreciate your help.

You mean that a microfluriometer can be used as a OD microplate reader?

no. a fluorimeter reads the light emitted at an angle to the excitation beam. for absorbance the microplate reader reads the beam of light from the source (straight through).
you can use the fluorimeter to read light scatter.
