Dissertation write up - (Jan/31/2008 )
Whats the best way to manage the disseration write up.
That is a great question.
I am in the process of writing mine at the moment.
I think that it is best to start w/ a detailed outline, so that you know what your tasks are.
I am tackling the Background first, b/c it requires really delving into the literature -- which is good, b/c it makes me really think deeply about my work.
I am saving the Methods/Results for later, b/c those are the easiest to write -- but you could go in reverse:
easiest to hardest in order to get things quickly rolling.
I also try to write at the same time period of day everyday (evening) -- I am the most productive w/ writing at this time, and there is no-one around to interrupt! -- but perhaps you will do better in the early am -- it is a good idea to figure out your own personal productivity habits and work w/ them.
Also, set goals for each day (reasonable goals though -- b/c you don't want to feel bad if you can't meet them!)
I found this program to be very helpful with organization, setting goals and providing helpful tips.

If you don't want to purchase it you can just sign up for the newsletter. She sends out a newsletter every month with really helpful tips and picks a question to answer every month. I know the woman that created this program and she is really amazing. Some of the tips are similar to what was just mentioned but with more information.
I'm going to start writing soon as well and I found it to be very helpful to look at my recently graduated classmates dissertation. Then I know how much details I have to provide, layout, and format.
Good luck!
Minnie mouse has asked a similar question and it had inputs on how to write the thesis. Search the forum.
