Expensive genetic statistics softwares. R they essential? - Expensive genetic statistics softwares. R they essential? (Jan/30/2008 )
Greetings everyone,
i am failry new to genetic statists. I was browsing online, looking for a good genetic analysis software which would also have a good tutorial program so i could learn the genetic statistic analysis myself. I don't know if we are allowed to mention company names, but this company seems to offer a good program for my experimental design which is basically candidate gene SNP association between cases and controls. ( i am aiming for a 100 cases and a hundred controls) My question is: Is there is a cheaper way? This program will cost like $3000! do I really ne ed it. R there any online free programs available or maybe cheaper versions?
Anybody? any advice?
are you personally going to pay for it or your project? you could use R (www.r-project.org/), which is for free, or minitab, which has special student prices.

thanks for the tip on the website. Would you say this would be as usefull as a software we actually have to purchase? i mean should we be investing in a genetic statistical program or would this online facility be sufficient?
i would not say it is as usefull as the software you have to purchase. not even if the company offers a good program for your experimental design. the software of R is customizable, so you can put any design you want there when you know how to use it, however it takes some programming knowledge - consequently time if you don't know how to do it. if i were you i would suggest you to take the option that takes least time. it really sucks when your scholarship is over and you can not finish the things you have to.
