I suggest that we do a bot test on the JB and HG, like getting them to post in a different forum page (e.g. "who are you" in chitchat), most bots won't do that by themselves. Dave does occasionally post in the other pages.

And not just one but two new identities….it’s got homeland security written all over it. But I like conspiracy theories and I sure wanna ride one of them Harleys with a gas mask on. So Vetticus, this feels like déjà vu all over but if I could just bring up the issue (once again) about the banning of members and deletion of posts…. is there a time limit to dave2’s suspension from this forum or is it an eternal banishment?

If there are clear-cut guidelines… then fine…they should be enforced but since the forum doesn’t have any, then I’m guessing that a lot depends on someone else’s discretion. How about second chances, shouldn’t we expect them or at least hope to be given them if we committed an infraction?

C’mon I agree that a TO (time out) is sometimes necessary to "punish" extremely rude and recalcitrant behavior but the suspension shouldn’t be indefinite or forever. Besides wasn’t he participating in the technical forums (without any problems) which probably should have had more bearing in considering his case? I think that the administrators already made their point and I’m pretty sure that it wasn’t an easy decision (to ban anybody) and hopefully he (Dave) got the point too and everyone else for that matter and what exactly is this point: you can’t mess around with that patched-eye Panda no matter how cute and lovable he appears to be (he can be tough if he needs to be)

BTW…Belated happy birthday Bioforum…those bamboo leaves aren’t exactly birthday treats…I’d go for a crème brulee or a tiramisu ...you’ve got that famous thumb anyway to hold a spoon or a fork..(there shld be something about evolution in this post)

this is a forum on EVOLUTION AND DARWINISM.
therefore, the majority of the posts (a few side tracks are allowed)... should be about (you guessed it) evolution and or darwinism.
this encompasses evolution, darwinism, creationism, thoughts on how things became how they are.... etc, you get the point.
if you want to talk about politics, may i suggest the chitchat page.
if you want to talk about oil prices, may i suggest the chitchat page.
if you want to talk about religion, may i suggest the philosophy page.
if you want to talk about cloning, depending if you mean e-coli and plasmid (a technical page), sheep (technical page, maybe animal page), or cloning as in how it will effect society (maybe philosophy) or life (evolution page).
if you want to talk about how evolution has been tied up with religion... you make the call.
think about what the topic is about, and try to find the page where it will fit in.
if you disagree with someone's opinion, state why, and provide a reasonable argument.
if you disagree with someone's opinion, don't take it personally. this is a public forum, no need to get worked up to the point of having a heart attack because someone on the otherside the planet, whom you have never met, doesn't agree with you on the finer points of sludge growth. also, do not post something with the intent to working someone up to the point they have a heart attack.
do not attack someone. do not snipe at someone (unless it's funny). do you really need to swear?
this is a friendly area, this is for open communication.
please note this "open communication"... this also means if you post something as silly as thinking australia is next to germany and france... lots of people will see it.
also note, that if you start making "factual statements" be prepared to provide the evidence for it. this will usually entail more than a, the bible/koran/holy book of choice, b, a website run by a bunch of loonies, c, it's what my sister's boyfriend's aunt's neighbour said. unless your sister's boyfriend's aunt's neighbour has had the info published in a peer reviewed journal which we can see, you won't convince us.

this is just what i thought was obvious. i'm not talking on behalf of bioforum... but this just makes sense. anyone have something to add?

i've just re-read the thread and dave was condesending, insulting and displayed a hatred of europeans bordering on outright racism (something mirrored in our two new nutters i might add)

answering a few questions on the bioforum doesn't cancel that out (his answers wer'nt that great either from what i remember)

Ive seen similar on another forum - the g######v was banned and the problem was solved

that way we can argue between ourselves and no-one gets hurt

Seriously, thanks for giving us a rundown on how to post, what to post and what not to post, I just need these reminders now and again. And stuff like posting in the wrong forum….that can be easily resolved by having a moderator. Isn't this once again my cue to volunteer for the position? I've been rejected twice before but hope springs eternal. I admit that my science is a little bit shaky but for potential posters just throw in a few technical words such a cladogram, bottleneck, genetic drift and voila your post gets gated in. I can be a model moderator (you said so yourself). With the other issues you raise, like you said they're so obvious that any further discussion would only be superfluous.

Why don't we just go back to dave's suspension (which is more interesting to discuss IMO).. I was sort of suspecting that there's something more to this and it's not just because of his posts that got him suspended. After all, the other members managed to dismantle his arguments one by one (he should`ve realised that this forum is full of scientists). And it couldn't be his aggressive and insulting style either…that's quite easy to handle ie just ignore or dismiss it as being just all dragon breath without the dragon.

But making threats? How downright dumb and freakin' mental is that? Ooops did I just 'almost' swear? In defense of swearing, I'd like to misquote Tony de Mello, "swearing sometimes provides the spiritual relief that prayers can't give"….anyways, I'm still trying to figure out how one could make them threats stick?

I've had my share of those but the most serious I've ever had to deal with is "I'll never ever speak to you ever again…I mean ever as in forever and ever" . But what about in this case…."If you don't do what I want, I'm gonna trash this forum..really good" or is it "I'm gonna send my american thug cousins over there to cause you some bodily harm…oh, and btw where is the southern hemisphere again?" or how about "I'm gonna fry your server by sending you millions of creepy PMs or e-mails"….do you see what I mean? I'd like to know how a threat could be that effective therefore necessitating a rather drastic counter measure….5 months of being persona non grata…I'm quite sure he's sooo gonna be reminded of this…

I almost felt jealous…..me no have Harley…me not know to drive a bike…Howcome you have no problems arguing with me but you want to exclude the likes of him. Hmmm..Is this a guy thing? So we'll go on merrily arguing among ourselves? (just being snipey and friendly at the same time). His tech answers weren`t that great, then someone got banned and the problem was solved.....great…good times…I think I`m gonna go back to drinking again (coffee, that is).
