Rhamnogalacturonan I - (Oct/28/2007 )

Hi there,

I just wanna make sure if the notes given in class are correct...

This is what it says...
Rhamnogalacturonan I (RG1) is a Linear polymer of alternating galacturonic acid (GalA) and rhamnose (Rha) molecules
-alpha-Rha-(1-->4)-alpha-GalA-(1-->2)-alpha-Rha-(1-->4)-a-GalA-(1-->2)--etcetc

But shouldn't it be
-alpha-Rha-(1-->2)-alpha-GalA-(1-->4)-alpha-Rha-(1-->2)-a-GalA-(1-->4)--etcetc

??

Thanks in advance

check this wikipedia page on pectin:

pectin

it explains the linkages in the chemistry section.

"Rhamnogalacturonan I "

apparantly nothing to do with star trek then

(reminds me why i disliked chemistry so much)

So I am right according to wiki...I think tongue.gif...

But I'm just wondering if I am reading it the correct way--do the bracketed numbers conicide with the molecule before or after?

i think the notes are correct. the 1 carbon of galacturonic acid is linked to the 2 carbon of rhamnose (1->2) then the 1 carbon of rhamnose is linked to the 4 carbon of galacturonic acid (1->4).
