Calculation of Mutation Rate - Calculation of Mutation Rate (Mar/31/2004 )

I am currently a Nanyang Polytechnic Bioinformatics final year student. I am doing an assignment that requires me to calculate the rate of mutation from a set of sequences. The sequences may or may not be aligned using ClustalW Multiple Sequence Alignment. I would like to know if anyone can help me on how to calculate the rate of mutation from a set of sequences. Can someone help me on this? Is there a formula, or a technique on how to do this? ClustalW outputs the sequences aligned to tell me the mutation hotspots. Is there a way to use this alignment to calculate the rate of mutation? I would appreciate any help, thanks!
