Nice environment to work - Biopolis in Singapore (Jun/13/2007 )
Hello peeps,
I got back in one piece (luckily). Quite a good experience to travel to other places. Here are some of the photos.
It is Biopolis in Singapore and I really love the place. It is so westernised and looks very futuristic.
They have this very cool range of names for the buildings. Eg: Chromos, Helios, Nanos....
did you work there or were only as a tourist?
how difficult is it to get a position there?
nice pictures by the way...
one thing i have to admit... S'pore is better in research, compare to Malaysia... they have no quota for their people and they are willing to hire brains from Malaysia that 'kicked out' by Malaysia govt because of the quota system here.
for those who are not familiar/never heard of quota system.... this is a system by govt (according to them, to protect local malays), that there MUST have certain percentage of Malays in recruitment of ANYTHING!!! from small matter like getting a licence for business, to buying houses (Malays have discount to buy house and developer must allocate certain number of houses for them when they launch new housing estate)... and also to get yourself into a local university!!! therefore, Chinese and Indians here must struggle 100000x harder to get into local univ.
there are some unfortunate brains/genius couldn't get better opportunity after graduate due to race/quota issue, choose to go S'pore and they actually get a better opportunity there... as S'pore do not offer job according to race/skin colour, they give the job to whoever (even from other country), according to their capability.
This is the place where i grow up...
how difficult is it to get a position there?
nice pictures by the way...
I went there as a tourist. Just too look at how BioPolis looks like. I am heading there again for work purpose. Anyone from there want to meet up to bring me around BioPolis?
To get a position in the Biopolis isn't that hard. If you are from other countries, the Singapore government is basically very happy to take you in. In fact, most the PIs there are foreigners. But the details I wouldn't know as I am not the resident there. Any Singaporean here to clarify?
sanjiun81, I do understand how you feel. Being the same situation as you, I can't help it but just to accept it. Come to think about it, can you imagine local universities in Malaysia don't promote journal publications? In fact, if some PI do publish some papers in good impact factor journals, other PIs and the head of the department will actually feel intimidated by them. Consequently, it will be some politics again and again. That's the reason why Malaysians only publish in local journals which is abit pathetic from my point of view.

ya... politics everywhere.....
but still glad the situation in my place is not that bad compare to some univ.
Welcome back TimJim. Thank you for the pictures. Looks like a 'must-go' place.
sanjiun, I am glad to hear that your place isnt as bad as others.
Nabin.. hehe thanks.. the biopolis is really cool and nice to look at. A must go in Singapore other than the commercial Chinatown, Orchard Road etc...
