How many fellowships/grants can a postdoc have? - (May/18/2007 )

Hi, there, i am a postdoc and i just got one fellowship awarded. However, i was told by my mentor that i can only hold 1 fellowship, thus i won't be eligible for other fellowships/grants? is this true? Since i have so many great ideas in my mind, i really want to apply more. Please advise!

Thank you!

P.S. if you think i can possibly have more than 1, please kindly provide evidence.

there are various aspects: one aspect is morality: the one fellowship you have more, another, who has still no fellowship but likes to have, has not; so, it is also a question of fairness;

other limitations may lay in the rules for funding, may saying that fellowship is only given to those which do not have other sources to make their living

in addition, multiple fellowship holding may not be supported by the personnel administration of your university or hospital;

another case is if you use funds for upkeep the lab or to recruit someone: there appears to be no limitation and depends on your effort...

Good news that you atleast have a fellowship. I dont have any as I am not eligible to apply to most of the grants.

If you can do justice to all the grants once you get them, then go for it. Because even though many grants are for 1-2 years, one will be quiet busy with that project and might have difficulty focusing on 2 or more different projects.

I think it depends really on the grants/fellowship. But in general, must funding sources do not allow you to hold more than one fellowship. But you can still aplly for a grant, that is completely focussed on a specific project (i.e. that is not paying your position). For holding more than one fellowship at a time, the Bearer is perfectly right - somebody else won't get one...

I'd say the funding bodies won't award you more than one. So by getting another one you might have to "give back" you one that you already have. You could apply for another one after the first has finished or why not apply for a project or programme grant in collaboration with your mentor or another researcher. This way your idea has the possibility to get funding and you will be recognised for it and having someone with more experience will help with the application process.

Thank you everyone! So, if i understand correctly, i can still apply for grants but not fellowships during the period when i am paid by a particular fellowship award, right? Can someone please explain further the difference between a project/program grant vs. postdoc fellowship? Are there any grants (not fellowships) available for postdocs?

Thank you again!

Project grant would be do to a particular project with money for staff (post-docs or research assistants), not funding the main applicant's salary( for PIs) and a programme grant is larger that version of a project grant to support a whole program of related research on a bigger scale (£1 million plus over 5-7 years). You could apply as a co-applicant with your boss or other members of the department with more experience for these grants to give you a better chance. I'm guessing the project grant is the way to go, I think you have to be very well established for the program grants and they are not very easy to get.
