Do you think this is dangerous? - controversy abounds...and stupidity too (May/02/2007 )

Recently I read on the news about an upsurge in antisemitism and racism in general in the US and Europe since 2000. I thought these people were few and far between...I think I may be wrong. I conducted a search online and came to a website called Stormfront.com, a congregation of people who call themselves White Nationalists - a forum much like the format of bioforum. I was horrified to discover that these are not a bunch of ignorant rednecks. They are articulate, calculated, determined and abundant. But the things they are saying....well, I'll let you decide. Do you think these people pose a threat. I know the KKK is now regarded as a bunch of loons, but what about these guys? If you are curious at all, check it out. I, for one, am pretty shaken by this.

I could not find a forum on that site. Isnt it a game making site or something? Am I wrong? unsure.gif

I also got games . . . yeah, these computer games are dangerously addictive.

in my opinion, these guys are a group of ignorant people poisoned by their cultural beliefs and fanaticism towards race superiority. I dont believe in generalizations such as whites are better than blacks or browns, or that Jewish people are bad etc..the fact is you cannot "generalize" traits to a group. If for example you say, chinese are bad people, then you are talking about 1.5 billion people. There are exceptions in every case. People should not be judged based on their group but rather they should be judged as an individual. blush.gif

Kathy: It definitely sucks, it's awful. But the scary thing is, it's real. This forum alone is over 100,000 strong...imagine how many there actually are. Yeah I changed it to my new puppy...he is much cuter happy.gif

Arvinsign: You'd be amazed what kind of rebuttals these people have to arguments like the one you have made. Not all of them, but a good bunch of them are capable of talking in circles in a very smart way to try to get their point across. This is not a group of morons - just misguided sociopaths it seems....

Governments are practically impotent in cracking down on these AAAs (Association of Aryan Assholes) bec. they’re just exercising their right to freedom of speech and freedom of expression. Unless a crime has been committed, these hate mongers can disseminate whatever vitriolic and vile racist propaganda they want.

But if I can just hijack this thread to bring up something not so off-tangent and has been bugging me for some time now. It’s got to do with “all men are created equal”(US constitution) and the corollary “but some are more equal than others” (Orwell).

Recently I had a tension-filled discussion with a foreign postdoc from a neighboring lab. She started off with the usual PI bashing which I consider normal since there are no perfect bosses, she then gets more agitated and then finally ended up with, “you white people get everything”. I was so dumbstruck bec. I didn’t see it coming. One minute we were doing the gripe and rant routine, the next minute I was included as one of the bad guys.

But I could see that she was genuinely distressed so I reigned in my outrage (brownie points for moi) and asked her to explain what she really meant. She let loose a tirade, the summary of which (that which I could make out) was that the ”white” students are more favored, have more rights and privileges and are being groomed by the ‘establishment’ to take over the same positions so as to maintain the status quo and just too bad for the foreigners and immigrants.

I’m not gonna write further on how our stressful discussion continued and ended … this is probably a very sensitive issue for most people but I would like to hear more opinions about this. I’m sitting on a fence with this one and corny as it may sound, like a cornfield, I’m all ears. wink.gif

the problem is not all people are created equal - i'm smarter then most people on this planet - question is does this make me worth more? if i'm not worth more then why do i get paid more than a binman and less than a footballer. is football more important than science.etc etc
while we judge based on ability we leave open the chance for others to judge based on colour, race and creed.
if we dont compare and judge we would have no way of finding the right people to communicate our ideas to.
why do you think people in this forum are doing phds - when you have one it is a badge that says you are worth listening to (of course does lack of a phd mean you are not worth listening to)
you can see how complicated this can get.
from my experience i have never seen grooming of students according to colour but i have seen people ignored because they are not the "right stuff" (lazy, spitefull, grumpy etc or just not too smart).
to say white people "look after their own" is a racist generalisation and should be treated with the contempt it deserves.

It sounds to me as though this girl is no better really than a lot of the people on that site: she is attributing her hardships to entire race of people!! It's amazing that she got worked up enough to blurt that out! I would imagine this kind of thinking does more to slow her progress and education than anything else. Although I would imagine that there are particular establishments that are guilty of the kind of behavior she is describing...so let's give credit to that. Personally, I'm staunchly against the practice of affirmative action. I don't think there's anything affirmative about it. It's just a way of compensating for a serious societal problem by using a kind of "positive racism", whereby people to progress on the basis of their merit, but based on disenfrancisement that shouldn't exist to begin with. Just my rant. Back to the topic... :-)
