MacConkey agar - used to identify G-ve ? (Apr/13/2007 )

is MacConkey agar used as a tool to identify G-ve bactera?

does ALL G-ve bacteria grow on it? do ANY G+ve ones grow on it?

Mac conkey agar is used :
1) 2 differentiate Gram-negative enteric bacteria that can ferment the sugar lactose (Lac+) from those that cannot (Lac-).
2) 2 identify Gram negative enteric pathogens
3) Bile salt & Crystal Violet (key ingredient of Mac conkey agar) - inhibits de growth of Gram positive bacteria

Not all Gram negative bacteria can grow on Mac conkey agar such as Campylobacter, helicobacter, Haemophilus etc, only those belonging 2 the
family : Enterobacteriaceae can grow on them
