dont worry about them most of them are just carcinogenic and highly toxic

be ware of "phenol" it is really dangerous and also if you use EtBr staining it is carcinogenic you could search bioforum for more information.

Even though you don't learn the fine details of what's happening, I'd recommend you think about using one of the multitude of extraction kits. They are probably safer than doing it from scratch. Obviously they cost more than doing the thing yourself, but they are quicker, and will get you going quicker.
