Donation to cancer, who will receive the money? - (Feb/05/2007 )
Hi all,
It seems to me that most of the researches are done in the university labs where the university can financially support the research, or the research is supported by the government.
I wonder is there any company or lab that do researches on, for example cancer, and producing knowledge but no supported by government or universities and not selling any products?
Besides, there are a lot of donations to cancer research, but where does the money eventually go to? Government labs? Universities? Private researchers? All of them? How and who can apply for the donated money?
Thank you
Regards,
William

I think other cities have these sorts of institutions too
there are some collaborations and affiliations with both universities and government, but a vast amount of funding comes from donors. sometimes the donor chooses where the money goes, sometimes they just give it to the fundraising dept., that parcels it out
there are several institutes that survive with the money given by people for cancer research, autoimmune disease research, genetic diseases.
one part of the money is to help families of patients (need to pay hospital, apparatus, someone helping at home and so on), some parts go for research and a smaller part goes for advertisement for people giving money.
the money for research goes to the research institute, but also can contribute to grants for students in university, university labs.
I guess it depends on where you are. Here in Canada, apart from the CIHR which is the major federal funding agency for health research, there are some private foundations (you can google them) which accept donations and then disburse the funds as they see fit- they usually spread them around and labs usually benefit from these.
