Ischemia - (Jan/18/2007 )

Does anyone know how ischemia could induce glutamate excitotoxicity ?

Because of the loss of blood supply, there is a very important depletion of energy so the ionic gradient inside and outside of the cell is lost because of the failure of the energetic pumps required to maintain it. Thus, membrane potential is lost and membranes depolarize. Voltage dependent calcium channels become activated and aminoacids such as glutamate are released into the extracellular space.

I´ve attached here an excellent review about this, I´m sure it will help you wink.gif
