Does salary matter? - (Jan/04/2007 )

Does salary matter?
This question rose in my mind when I compared the average salary of a say ~4 years experienced person in the field of biology and others say management or computer science. In our country if converted to US dollars, average salary of a techie is ~$1000 to $1500. (It is considered high salary here because for example a moderately lavish square meals for a whole month will not cost you more than $100). But a person even with a PhD degree and ~4 yrs exp, in biology will earn anywhere between $500 to $ 700..I donno if this is the same scenario elsewhere.. So what we are all doing is say a kind of social work? Hmm or may be I was a little perturbed by the high salaries my classmates and juniors are minting!

I have the feeling it's everywhere the same. Absolutely not well paid for the numerous years of study and hours of work.
it's fine when you are student, because money doesn't matter. But later, when you want to have a family, I find that difficult.

It is better to do something you enjoy rolleyes.gif and have a moderate salary than do something you dislike ph34r.gif and earn lots of money!
Besides, the more money you earn, the more money you spend.

Mangement is a high pressure job and most of the time you can only make a decision once, unlike research where experiments can be repeated!!

If i didnt have a family and kids, then I wouldnt mind the money I was making. But things r different with a family. You need a minimum level of salary to have a decent life with kids.

As kids get older and u r getting older, this fact starts to bug a lot.

Money matters - not only to those with family but also a lot to students. With the little I make, I am trying to share with some of my frens but there is always that feeling that if I could make more I could have made more people happy.

Job satisfaction is a big thing but I think money comes first than anything if U are living in a society but if U don't have to care about the society then yes, money does not mean anything.

If someone thinks money is not a big thing and is earning more than what is enough, please contact me. I accept donations! rolleyes.gif

when i was single and jobless, i always managed to get some source of money rolleyes.gif. and when we married we even had more money! and now that we are three we have more and more money! imagine when our son was born we got around 10,000 dollars of total gifts! wub.gif now when we are broke we are planning to get another baby. preferable a son rolleyes.gif to get more money of course laugh.gif

seriuosly it is like that: if I have much money, I will buy 1000 piece train set for my kid, if I dont have much moeny I will buy something cheap from the recycled shop sleep.gif . But I'll never work in something i deslike just to get him 1000 peice train set. After all he does prefer to see his mommy happy to the trains. (maybe ninja.gif )

In my country its a shame to tell u our salary as a university staff member and most of us work in private labs to get more money just to be able to live in a discent way but after all these years i wouldnt trade it back for millions, i love my job.

Living is easy and if U have an understanding family even minimum would be sufficient. If I have a family that would not mind, I would rather go to some village and run a small clinic charging minimum. But, unlike what Kathy said, life is not just train set for a kid, we have much more to earn for. Education is not cheap.

From what I have seen till now, only thing I have understood is money is the only thing needed. Those lines 'money does not buy love, money does not buy sleep, etc' are all good only for books.

All I really need right now is lot of it . .. .not for a cosy home, nor for good food and cloths but so that I can do something creative with that and so that I can help those who are in real need.

The best things in life are free;
But you can keep them for the birds and bees;
Now give me money . . . .
That's what I want . .
That's what I want, yeah
That's what I want

You're lovin' gives me a thrill
But you're lovin' don't pay my bills
Now give me money
That's what I want
That's what I want, yeah
That's what I want

Money don't get everything it's true
What it don't get, I can't use
Now give me money
That's what I want
That's what I want, yeah
That's what I want, wah

Money (That's what I want) . .. Barrett Strong's song covered by Beatles.

But yes, Though I do care for money, 'money can't buy me love'

money is not doing everything, but it helps a lot.
life is expensive here, and one university salary is not a lot, with two it's fine, so, when one contract is ending, we stress. If I would have a better salary, I would be more happy.
However, I'm not going to look for a new job now... Maybe later?

Salary matters. I enjoy the fun of working in this field but when it comes to end of months and bills are piling, it's not fun at all. Plus, with good salary comes good vacation every year. Sigh.
