help biochemical pathway ! - lactate effect on mammalian cells (Dec/18/2006 )
hi.
any one knows about the effect of high lactate concentration in cell culture media during growth effects the mammalian cells. needs exact pathway how high lactate concentrate is toxic to cells?
what is the mechanism behind this.
thanks in advances

I do not know if there is a special pathway; harmful effects of high concentration of lactate is first of all a matter of pH which effects membrane potential, ionic fluxes and may denaturize extracellular domains

Is there any correlation between lactate concentration and Osmolality? I Observed in lab, as lactate concentrations increases, during the growth phase simantaneously the Osmolalty increases.

happy christamas to one and all.

of course, increase of ionic strength increases osmolality (do you use really osmolaliyt? more common in use is osmolarity...)
