DNA extraction- bacterial cells - kits - PLease help!!! (Dec/03/2006 )

Hi,

I wish to purchase a commercial kit to extract DNA from cultured cells and tissues. The problem is I need to do some extarctions on bacteria too for Southern hybridization too. Can I use this kit to extract DNA from bacteria? I can't afford to buy 2 different kits.... Please advice!!! Thanks in advance

Why not extract bacterial DNA using any of the methods out there. Thereare heaps that don't require te use of a kit just a few chemicals. Check in Sambrook or Maniatis. I like to use the XS buffer method..do a search in the forum and I am sure it will come up.

You can use a commercial Tissue DNA kit for both. for bacteria if its gram positive you just need to treat it with lysozyme.
