Purpose of High ionic strength buffers - (Dec/02/2006 )

May i know what is the purpose/rationale of having high ionic strength buffers for Gel filtration chromatography (size exclusion chromatography)?

i think high molar buffers are used to exclude ions attached to gel beads for the purpose of elution..
