How to choose an outgroup for phylogenetic tree? - (Nov/07/2006 )

Hi all,

I would like to draw a phylogenetic tree and i am not sure how to choose an outgrouup to get the root of the tree?

The closest genus?

I am working with Lactobacillus. Hope somebody can help.

Thanks.

Choose one that is far away enough to be a clear outgroup and near enough to allow inference from the data. E.g. a taxon where the necessary sequence is known or where your primers also work on.
